Call for Editors

Emotions: History, Culture, Society (EHCS) is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary biannual journal published by De Gruyter Brill Publishing on behalf of The Society for the History of Emotions. EHCS is dedicated to understanding the emotions as culturally and temporally situated phenomena, and to exploring the role of emotion in shaping human experience and action by individuals, groups, societies and cultures. EHCS is published twice a year. The first two issues of Volume 1 (2017) were published in June and December 2017 by The Society for the History of Emotions (SHE). Since 2018, EHCS has been published by Brill (now De Gruyter Brill) on behalf of the Society.

We are now seeking an editorial team willing to serve for a five-year term, with the possibility of renewal for a further five years. The editorial team would normally consist of three or four named editors, who are specialists in the interdisciplinary field of emotions research. We also have two current book review editors in post. The journal is also supported by an editorial board with specific expertise in particular fields. Ideally, we would like to recruit a multi-disciplinary team that represents the various fields that publish in the journal. These include (but are not limited to): history, literature, sociology, classical studies, anthropology, gender studies, politics, religious studies, art history, and philosophy. We publish research with wide geographical and temporal remit. We are looking for a team that can guide the journal into its next decade and bring the knowledge and skills to ensure that our diverse remit is fulfilled. We welcome applications from individuals with the goal of putting together a team that supports the journal’s needs. Individuals may also wish to suggest others with whom they could creatively and effectively work and whose skills and expertise would be complementary.

The basic duties of an EHCS editor are:

  • Reviewing articles as they are submitted and deciding whether they should go for peer review. This can involve consultation with a member of our editorial board.
  • Managing the peer review process through the online Editorial manager system
  • Editing articles for clarity, content, and argumentation
  • Answering queries from prospective authors and special issue editors
  • Ensuring that authors submit illustrations and permissions to publish text and illustrations
  • Coordinating with book review editor(s)
  • Co-ordinating special issues with outside editors (usually an annual competition)
  • Maintaining contact with our editorial board and utilizing editorial board
  • Expertise in vetting initial submissions

The current editors are Katie Barclay, Giovanni Tarantino, and, in an interim-role, Diana Barnes. We are looking for editorial team members to start in 2026, with a staggered overlap between old and new editorial teams, designed to enable continuity and ensure the new team is well supported in taking on their roles. The timeline for start dates can be negotiated, but ideally by June 2026. The current editors are happy to answer any questions about the roles, its pains and pleasures, if desired. Editing a world-leading and innovative journal is a hugely stimulating and rewarding role, which we, as the current editorial team, have thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from.

The current journal is supported by The Society for the History of Emotions. It provides an in-house copyeditor and De Gruyter Brill manage production and sales. Workload support for individual editors needs to be negotiated with their home institutions or on a volunteer basis. There is no remuneration for this role. We also welcome further institutional support if available.

Please send a statement of interest and 3-page CV to editemotions@gmail.com by the 7 January 2026.
